As gas, grocery prices climb parents shift back to school spending habits

Every year, back-to-school shopping gets a little more expensive, but this year there's another trend emerging. A new survey from U.S. News & World Report finds that more parents expect their children to help pay for back-to-school expenses, whether that's with money from a summer job or an allowance.

"It really shows that parents are kind of in survival mode right now," explained Adriana Ocañas, a consumer credit cards analyst at U.S. News. "We found that 80% of parents and guardians say it's not necessarily the price of back-to-school supplies that's getting them; it's the cost of literally everything else. It's your gas, it's your groceries."

"We also did a recent survey on credit card debt and found that 56% of Americans are using credit cards to cover everyday expenses," Ocañas said.

Twenty-two percent of parents and guardians expect their children to help with back-to-school costs. In other words, roughly 1 in 5 children will be expected to contribute financially this year.

However, that number varies depending on household income. For example, parents and guardians in households earning more than $150,000 a year are more likely to expect their children to contribute financially than those in households earning less than $50,000.
