Early morning storms topple trees, knock out power in parts of the Triangle

Powerful storms packed a punch as they passed through early Monday morning, knocking over some trees in the Triangle area.

Crews closed off a portion of Lake Dam Road near Lake Johnson after a large tree fell across the road.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker arrived to find Raleigh police taping off the road. As of 4 a.m., no work was being done to remove the tree yet.

With how wet things have been the past week, trees are becoming more susceptible of getting toppled over.

Elsewhere in the Triangle, fallen trees and limbs knocked out power for 1,000 Duke Energy customers in northeast Chapel Hill near the Durham County line in neighborhoods off Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard. Duke Energy estimated power would be restored by 10 a.m.

More than a dozen people also lost power in parts of southwest Raleigh and south Raleigh. The WRAL Breaking News Tracker saw utility crews working to restore power to people along Kaplan Drive as of 6 a.m.
