A man and woman face charges after human remains were found along a trail in Burke County.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said the Burke County Sheriff's Office and Glen Alpine police responded to a nature trail on Hennessee Street on July 21. The SBI found human remains on the trail the following day, prompting a death investigation.

On July 25, Jamar Quarmaine Propst and Tosha Lee Lewis, both 36, were arrested. Each face charges of two counts of felony conspiracy and two counts of first-degree murder.

The SBI said additional human remains were found on the trail at the same location following their arrests.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

Propst and Lewis are being held without bond. A court date is scheduled for July 27.

The human remains will be identified once family members are notified.

The state and federal Bureaus of Investigation, Catawba County Sheriff's Office, Morganton Department of Public Safety and Myrtle Beach Police Department were also involved in the investigation.
