Bar owner has 3 suggestions to make Raleigh's Glenwood South safer

A 17-year-old will be charged as an adult in connection to a shooting on July 4 near Glenwood South.

Kenna Daughtry is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied car.

She is the eighth person to be charged in connection to the takeover incidents across Raleigh on July 4, and the second to be charged as an adult.

Raleigh Police said they’re still pursuing leads that could result in more arrests.

RPD mobile command buses have been sitting on Glenwood South for weeks, but one business owner is pushing for the city to do more.

“I have been in this industry for over 30 years and I have rarely, if ever, seen a night like July 4. That was the 1000-year flood,” said bar owner Dan Lovenheim.

Lovenheim sent a letter to Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce calling for three changes from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends:

Increases in patrols
shutting down the street to vehicle traffic and
eliminating street parking.

“Once they leave any one of my establishments, I no longer have control, and so that's once again why we're asking the city for a little bit more help in this situation,” said Lovenheim.

WRAL reached out to Raleigh Police and city leaders about Lovenheim’s requests, asking whether they would be considered.

Extra staffing could be difficult, with RPD currently having 93 openings. Boyce said filling those positions is imperative to have more patrols all over the city, like in Glenwood South.

“It’s going to increase the amount of officers we have, which will then increase our presence throughout our community which will help continue to keep Raleigh a safe city,” Boyce said.

As for the road closures and street parking changes, that would have to include the city council. WRAL reached out to Mayor Janet Cowell and Raleigh City Council Member Jane Harrison -- who represents Glenwood South -- about the possibility of those changes. By Friday afternoon, neither responded.
