Crews locate body of kayaker at Roanoke Rapids Lake in Halifax County

Crews in Halifax County have located the body of a kayaker who went missing last month on Roanoke Rapids Lake.

According to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, crews searching the lake on Saturday found the body of Angel Martinez, who was last seen on May 14.

Martinez was kayaking with a friend near the Fifth Street boat landing when the boat began to take on water, and the two were separated. People in the area heard screaming and called 911.

First responders were able to rescue Martinez's friend, who was found holding on to a lifejacket, but Martinez was not located. 

In May, his sister, Aparicio Martinez, told WRAL News that Roanoke Rapids Lake is a place the Martinez family has gone for decades. 

"We grew up here," Aparicio Martinez said. "When we grew up, we didn't have the time to explore it, but when we grew up and had his own family he took that time. In his free time, he would always come to the lake."
