Cummings takes No. 1 in final girls outdoor track & field rankings for 2026

For the first time, Cummings is the No. 1 team in the final HighSchoolOT outdoor girls track & field rankings, presented by the State Employees' Credit Union. The Cavaliers were No. 1 in the indoor season as well.

Cummings, the 4A champ, was followed by 8A champ Mallard Creek, 7A champ Marvin Ridge, Clayton, and 6A champ Ragsdale.

Scores are calculated as if there was one big state meet featuring every in-state school's times from their respective state championships. The top 20 spots are scored instead of top 10, with top-10 placers getting one bonus point and 1st place getting an additional bonus point — 22, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Ties were broken by which team had the higher placement in their respective classification. If still tied, it then went to which team had the highest individual placer. There is also a rule that no state champion can be ranked behind a school from its same classification.

Other state champions in the top 25 include NCISAA D1 champ Durham Academy (ninth) and 2A champ Corvian Community (14th).

There were many state champs who went unranked: North Lincoln (5A), Union Academy (3A), Thomas Jefferson Classical (1A), Wake Christian (D2), and Fayetteville Academy (D3).

The HighSchoolOT top 25 is the state's top set of rankings, featuring teams from all classifications across the four major associations.
