Glenwood Elementary School in Chapel Hill will soon close.

On Thursday, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board voted 7-0 to close the school effective for the 2027-2028 school year.

In a release from the school board, officials said the decision was about buildings and district sustainability.

“Throughout this process, our focus has remained on sustaining strong academic programs, supporting students and staff, and ensuring CHCCS can continue delivering the high-quality educational experience our community expects and deserves,” the statement read in part.

The school will still be open normally for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year and all programs housed at the school will remain during the school year.

Redistricting planning involving all elementary schools will begin during late summer to early fall, district officials said, adding they will launch a comprehensive public process that includes community meetings, draft options, opportunities for feedback, and revisions before any final decisions are made.

“We encourage our community to stay engaged throughout this process. More information about next steps, timelines, and opportunities for participation will be shared as soon as possible.”

WRAL News previously reported the district considered closing at least three schools, including Glenwood Elementary, Ephesus Elementary School and Seawell Elementary School. Both Ephesus and Seawell Elementary Schools will stay open.

Districts statewide say they are experiencing budget pressures, causing several schools to close, including in Granville, Vance and Cumberland counties.

On Thursday, district officials said the board is committed to every Glenwood staff member, student and family, “even as some aspects of our work will look different moving forward.”
